The Muddy Scrap Piles in Valheim; however, play an important role when it comes to obtaining specific crafting materials, and throughout the guide below I’ll tell you everything you need to know about them.
So, you’ll learn how to remove or mine the Muddy Scrap Piles in Valheim, and, the best locations to find them and why are they so important when it comes to evolving your settlement.
What Is A Muddy Scrap Pile In Valheim
As the name implies, a Muddy Scrap Pile is a deposit of mud and scraps that can be found in the Swamp Biome. You can see one of them below.

Mining a Muddy Scrap Pile in Valheim
These deposits may become annoying at first, mainly because you’ll have to remove them in order to progress through the Sunken Crypts.
But in fact, the Muddy Scrap Piles are quite useful as they provide a lot of Valheim Resources, one of them being the Scrap Iron.
Thus, whenever you need Iron, you’ll need to find a Scrap Pile.
A Muddy Scrap Pile in Valheim contains the following crafting materials and items:
- Scrap Iron – Used at a Smelter to craft Iron
- Leather Scraps – Common crafting materials used to craft equipment and build structures
- Withered Bones – Quest items used to summon Bonemass. Ten of them are required
Where To Find The Valheim Scrap Piles
The Valheim Scrap Piles can be found only in the Swamp Biome, and most of them are underground.
Specifically, they are inside the Sunken Crypts you can access using the Swamp Key you get from the second boss in the game, known as The Elder.
They are pretty easy to identify, but in case you need help you can see an example below.

Use the Swamp Key to open the Crypt Gates
When inside a Sunken Crypt the Scrap Piles must be mined in order to discover new rooms. Simply look for them on the walls, and start digging to advance through the dungeons.
Additionally, you’ll be able to find these piles outside, but keep in mind that there are two requirements here:
- First, you’ll need to remain in the Swamp
- Second, you need to get the Wishbone which is an item dropped by Bonemass
With the Wishbone equipped you can find Muddy Scrap Piles, Silver Veins, or Buried Treasures.
How To Mine The Muddy Piles Of Scrap In Valheim
Mining these Scrap Piles is extremely easy, especially because by the time you reach them you’ll have to mine Copper Ore and Tin Ore. And the process is similar.
Just equip your pickaxe and get close to a pile, then click the left mouse button.
One thing worth mentioning here; is that in order to mine these deposits you’ll need the Antler Pickaxe or anything above it.
The Antler Pickaxe, as you remember is crafted using the Hard Antler dropped by Eikthyr (the first boss in the video game).
And that’s it friends! Now you know where to find the Muddy Scrap Piles in Valheim, how to mine them, and why they are so important for your Viking.
