Withered Bones are Valheim items you’ll find in the Swamp Biome of the video game developed by Iron Gate, and even though they may seem important, they serve a single purpose. The Valheim Withered Bones, however, are also quest items, and once you use them to complete your objective, you should not carry them anymore.

So, let’s quickly go over the Withered Bones in Valheim and learn how to use them and where to find them.

What Is a Withered Bone in Valheim

As said, the Withered Bones are quest items, meaning that you’ll need them to summon the third boss in the game, named Bonemass. They are similar to the Deer Trophies we found to summon Eikthyr or the Ancient Seeds we used to summon The Elder.

Other than that, they are pretty much useless; that’s why once you defeat Bonemass, you can stop carrying them. According to the game’s description, a Withered Bone is  “A giant bone, knotted like old wood.” A single bone weighs 1.0, and you can stack up to 30 in a slot. Finally, they can be teleported, and you can see them below.

Where To Find Withered Bones

These items are easy to find, provided you know where to look for them and have the required equipment. They are located in the Swamp Biome, and they have two possible locations:

Let’s start with the Muddy Scrap Piles. These deposits can be found outside the Sunken Crypts as well, but they require the Wishbone, which is dropped by Bonemass.

Since you need the Withered Bones to summon him, you’ll want to look for the Scrap Piles inside the Sunken Crypts. To enter a Sunken Crypt, you need the Swamp Key, which is obtained by defeating the Elder boss. You can see one of these crypts below.

Once inside, use the Antler Pickaxe to mine the Muddy Scrap Piles, get these bones, and move from one room to another. You’ll be able to craft the said pickaxe after you deal with Eikthyr.

Remember that the Valheim Withered Bones can also be found without mining. Just look around for alcoves whenever you enter a new room. The moment you get 10, you can stop searching for them because that’s the number of bones you need to summon Bonemass.

How To Use the Withered Bones

Assuming you have 10 Withered Bones, next, you’ll want to find the location of Bonemass. This means you’ll continue exploring the Sunken Crypts until you find the Vegvisir Bonemass, a runestone like the one below.

Examine it, then mark the location of the third boss on your map. Next, exit the crypt and travel to the summoning altar. Here, you should see a rather large skull (pictured above).

Equip the 10 Withered Bones in one of your quick slots, then make the offering by standing in front of the skull’s mouth. This will summon Bonemass, which is why you need the Valheim Withered Bones.

Once you deal with him, there is no point in collecting these items unless you want to fight the third boss again. That’s how you use the Withered Bones in Valheim and where you find them, so start mining, and also don’t forget to look for Bloodbags.
