Assassin’s Creed Codename Red, or AC Red, is probably the most controversial of all upcoming titles in the Assassin’s Creed franchise and one of the video games that could release earlier than most players expect.
Developed by Ubisoft Quebec, AC Codename Red made its debut during 2022’s Ubisoft Forward showcase when a short teaser was revealed, thus introducing the next destination players will get to visit: Feudal Japan.
Besides the fact that an Assassin’s Creed Japan game is what most fans have asked for quite some time now, the upcoming title could be a blockbuster, provided Ubisoft Quebec learns from an award-winning title—specifically Ghost of Tsushima.
The video game developed by Sucker Punch Productions set the bar pretty high, but it seems that Ubisoft is ready to match it and even go higher in terms of gameplay and story. So, let’s see what exactly is Assassin’s Creed Codename Red and why you’ll want to keep an eye on it.
What is Assassin’s Creed Code Red?
Assassin’s Creed Red is one of the three upcoming AC video games announced by Ubisoft in 2022 and the next major installment in the franchise, following Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and Assassin’s Creed Mirage.
Alongside Assassin’s Creed: Codename Jade and Assassin’s Creed: Hexe, Assassin’s Creed: Code Red was revealed by a 30-second long trailer you can watch below.
Assassin’s Creed Codename Jade was confirmed to be a mobile game set in Ancient China, and little is known about Assassin’s Creed: Hexe, but the AC Codename Red teaser trailer is relatively rich in information on what to expect from this ambitious project.
Assassin’s Creed Red: Will It Be About Feudal Japan?
The title Assassin’s Creed Codename Red doesn’t offer much information on what to expect from Ubisoft Quebec, but thanks to the trailer above, we can see that Feudal Japan is the next stop for all AC players.
As said, feudal Japan is a period you can already explore in Ghost of Tsushima, one of the best PlayStation-exclusive games, released on August 20, 2021, for PS5 and July 17, 2020, for PlayStation 4.
The award-winning video game developed by Sucker Punch Productions showed us the potential of Japan while also setting a bar in terms of quality for Ubisoft Quebec.
Luckily, the creative director for Assassin’s Creed Codename Red is Jonathan Dumont, who also worked on AC Odyssey and Immortals Fenyx Rising.
Assassin’s Creed Codename Red: When Is The Game Due Out?
Assassin’s Creed Code Red doesn’t have a release date yet; however, a recent LinkedIn post by Arisa Lagunzad mentions 2024.
Arisa Lagunzad is responsible for business development and brand management at Ubisoft, and her post on LinkedIn reads:
“Japan was the most requested history and culture from AC fans. We are seeking a sponsoring partner for this title Assassin’s Creed, Codename RED, for next year [sic]. Assassin’s Creed is really expanding the multi-media front with podcasts and manga series. Do you want to partner with the biggest blockbuster for 2024? I’d like to hear from you.”
You can see the said post above; however, while it may provide an Assassin’s Creed Codnemae Red release window, there are several aspects to consider, such as the raw translation from Japanese.
Furthermore, the sentence partner with the biggest blockbuster for 2024 doesn’t necessarily mean that Assassin’s Creed Red is set to release in 2024. It could mean that the partnership Arisa is looking for starts next year to promote the game heavily until its release.
Last, but not least, it’s worth remembering that Ubisoft’s schedule is quite busy. Starting with Assassin’s Creed Mirage, which releases in less than three months, followed by the AC Black Flag remake, the release of Infinity Hub, the development of Assassin’s Creed Hexe, and finally, the Assassin’s Creed Jade mobile game.
Regardless if it’s released in 2024 or not, Assassin’s Creed Codename Red is shaping up as the most ambitious of all new Assassin’s Creed games recently announced and the next premium flagship title we’ll get to play on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
