During the Failure to Communicate side mission in Starfield, you’ll get the chance to visit the Retrofitted Starstation, which has been overrun by Spacers, in an attempt to help Alban Lopez and the Defense Pact.

The Starfield Retrofitted Starstation is quite large and rich in loot; however, it also features several Safe Boxes you may want to unlock.

Unfortunately, unlocking the Retrofitted Starstation Safe Boxes requires a Key since it can’t be done using the Digipicks you may carry.

Since the Retrofitted Starstation Safes contain a lot of credits and other materials, finding the Stolen Key is mandatory if you want to make the most out of the Failure to Communicate side mission.

As such, throughout the following guide, I’ll tell you where to find the Starfield Stolen Safe Key to open all Safes on the Retrofitted Starstation or where to find the Safe Boxes, in case you already got the Stolen Key.

Where To Find the Starfield Retrofitted Starstation Safe Key

Unlike the Drill Waste Room Access Key, the Stolen Safe Key in the video game developed by Bethesda Game Studios is found by exploring the Retrofitted Starstation.

The said station must be cleared during the Failure to Communicate mission, and it will be your last objective before talking to Alban Lopez.

The Retrofitted Starstation is full of Spacers, and you must deal with all of them to get close to the Spacer Captain, who is the most important target on board the Starstation.

The Spacer Captain is found on the upper bridge in a large room. You can’t miss him because he is part of your objective.

After reaching the room in question, deal with him, then make sure you fully explore the chamber where you found him.

On the table in the middle of the room, you should find the Stolen Safe Key marked below, and next to it, the Grunt Issue 08 Magazine, which permanently increases the critical damage of your ballistic weapons by 5%.

How To Use the Starfield Stolen Safe Key

Now that you found the key let’s see where to find the Stolen Safes so you can get your hands on an impressive amount of Credits.

While standing near the table where the Stolen Key was found, facing the Retrofitted Starstation control monitors in the other room, exit through the door on your left side, then follow the stairs on the right side as you exit.

As you can see in the following screenshot, the Safe Boxes are found directly under the control room where you have found the Stolen Safe Key.

Get close to them and use the key to open all four Starfield Stolen Safes. Assuming you find them, you should be able to get around 20,000 Credits simply by opening all of them.

And that’s it! Now you know where to find the Starfield Stolen Safes Key on the Retrofitted Starstation and how to unlock them while playing the Failure to Communicate side mission.
