Augury of Bones is an Act 3 side-quest you can complete while exploring the Dry Steppes region of Diablo 4.

Also, assuming you’re aiming for 100% completion in the region, you’ll need to tackle all 38 Dry Steppes side-quests.

Diablo 4 Augury of Bones requires you to help Ogai, a male NPC, seek the secrets of the Grinning One, an ancient, long forgotten entity.

As such, don’t hesitate to check the walkthrough below if you get stuck at any point in D4 Augury of Bones side-quest.

How To Start Augury of Bones Quest in Diablo 4

To unlock the quest, the only thing you need to worry about is getting to Act 3 and reaching the Dry Steppes region.

Then you need to head to the town of Jirandai on the south side of the Untamed Scarps area.

Note that there is a Waypoint in Jirandai, and you can use it to fast travel to the town, provided you have it unlocked.

Once in Jirandai, you must go near the town’s Blacksmith, and you should find a female NPC named Nomin.

You need to talk to Nomin because she is the quest giver, and she will give you further instructions.

The NPC talks about the Grinning One, an ancient entity worshiped by our ancestors, and Ogai, a man who seeks its secrets and attention.

To continue, you have to complete the quest’s first objective, which is to speak with Ogai in the Valley of the Strayed on the east side of the Untamed Scarps area.

We’ve marked the exact location of the NPC on the following D4 map.

Ogai is found in the Valley of the Strayed on the east side of the Untamed Scarps area

Upon reaching the spot, you’ll find Ogai next to a stone pillar, and if you talk to him, he will ask you to collect bone dust from skeletons because he thinks somehow that is how you learn the Grinning One’s secrets.

He seems to be a madman, but let’s try to help him anyway.

After you finish talking to Ogai, you should open your map, and you can notice you’re already in the quest’s search area.

If you move through the search area, you’ll also notice that skeletons are marked with red dots.

Every time you kill an enemy with a red dot, you have a chance of getting bone dust.

Bone dust has a chance to drop from skeletons

You need three bone dust drops to complete the quest objective, so start hunting these skeletons.

Considering that bone dust is not a guaranteed drop, you’ll need to kill a bunch of skeletons until you’re done with the objective.

Once you’ve finished, go speak with Ogai and give him the bone dust, making him sneeze in the process.

The sneeze will reveal an Immemorial Inscription behind the NPC, which says:

Only the worthy earn the Grinning One’s attention. Prove themselves. Now, they know true happiness— their bliss boundless. The Old One’s Eternal Gift.

Finally, talk to Ogai again to finish Diablo 4 Augury of Bones quest and receive Renown points, Gold, XP, and a Cache. Also, you’ve now unlocked a new quest named Hubris Smiles Back, and if you complete it, you’ll see what happens to Ogai further.
