Diablo 4 Dead in the Water is a hybrid quest in which you must slay a bunch of enemies, gather some resources, and burn a few corpses.

Dead in Water counts as one of the 49 Hawezar side-quests, and you must tackle all of them assuming you’re a completionist.

But note that the Dead Water side-quest can be difficult, and you might require some assistance if you want to finish it fast.

As such, you should check the walkthrough below to make sure you don’t encounter any problems while playing D4 Dead in the Water side-quest.

How To Start Dead in the Water Quest in Diablo 4

Luckily, the side-quest doesn’t need you to meet any specific requirements; you just have to reach the Hawezar region and Act 5.

Then you must make your way to Backwater, a small town by the sea in the eastern part of the Forsaken Coast area.

To aid you even further, we’ve pinpointed the exact location of the quest giver on the next D4 map.

To quickly get to Backwater, you can use the town’s Waypoint, provided you have it unlocked from a prior visit.

Once in Backwater, you must find Tomaj and Szilvia on the east side of the town and talk to them.

It looks like Tomaj is a little drunk, but Szilvia was counting on him to do some work.

However, Tomaj says he can do the job even in this condition, and after Szilvia walks away, he asks you to help him out.

You need to find bodies that have washed ashore, check them for anything useful, then Tomaj will burn them.

Also, you must grab any extra salvage you find along the way.

Now let’s see where to find the fresh corpses and salvaged resources.

When you finish your little discussion with Tomaj, you can open your map to see the quest’s search area southwest of Backwater.

The quest's search area is southwest of Backwater

Within the search area, you must kill the enemies that get marked with red dots on the minimap for a chance to get salvaged resources.

Considering that the chance is pretty high and there are plenty of enemies with the red dots, you should be done with this objective in no time.

Note that you need a total of ten salvaged resources.

As for the fresh corpses, you need to explore every inch of the search area carefully, and when you get close enough to one, Tomaj will run to it.

Interact with the fresh corpses in the search area

Then you must interact with the corpse, and Tomaj will burn it. You’ll need to find three corpses.

Also, you must go to the south side of the search area, at the location marked on the following map, to find Ervin, an NPC in need of rescuing.

Now you must return to Backwater along with Tomaj and Ervin to speak with Szilvia, who you can easily find by following the blue marker on your minimap.

Upon listening to a spicy conversation between Szilvia and Tomaj, the woman NPC will ask you to tell the truth.

That is, if you helped Tomaj do his work or not, and you get to choose between two answers.

Whatever you choose, you complete Diablo 4 Dead in Water and receive some rewards: XP, Gold, Renown points, and a Cache. However, you’ve now unlocked The Greater Good side quest, also available in Blackwater, and you should complete it.
