If you’re interested in joining the Freestar Collective faction, you will have to embark on the Deputized mission in Starfield after taking down the Akila City bank robbers during the Job Gone Wrong mission.

Impressed with your skills, Marshal Daniel Blake will urge you to speak with Ranger Emma Wilcox in The Rock building to learn more about becoming a Freestar Ranger.

So, in this Starfield guide, I will provide you with step-by-step instructions on how to complete the Deputized mission for the Freestar Collective faction to become a Freestar Ranger Deputy.

How To Start the Starfield Deputized Mission

After finishing the Job Gone Wrong mission in Starfield, Marshal Daniel Blake will deputize you and recommend seeking out Ranger Emma Wilcox to join the Freestar Rangers.

If you are looking for Emma Wilcox, you can find her sipping on a drink at The Rock’s bar on the second floor.

If you are looking for Emma Wilcox, you can find her sipping on a drink at The Rock's bar on the second floor.

The Rock building is located in the heart of Akila City, and you can easily find it by going straight from the city gates.

When you talk to Ranger Emma Wilcox, she will inform you that in order to receive a badge, you must prove to her that you possess the qualities of a Freestar Ranger.

How To Complete a Mission from the Freestar Ranger Mission Board in Starfield

If you want to demonstrate your abilities, head back to the stairs and access the Freestar Rangers Mission Board on your left.

You’ll discover four Freestar Ranger missions, and accomplishing any of them will impress Ranger Wilcox and earn you the Freestar Ranger badge.

Access the Freestar Rangers Mission to discover four missions, and accomplishing any of them will impress Ranger Wilcox and earn you the Freestar Ranger badge.

While you just need to pick one mission for this objective, it is worth mentioning that the others will disappear once you finish your chosen one.

So, if you’re interested in earning some extra Credits, XP, and exploring the galaxy, it may be worth considering accepting all four Missions. The more complex a mission, the more credits you’ll be rewarded for completing it.

However, if you change your mind about carrying them out, you can abandon them anytime from your Missions menu by hovering over the mission and holding the “Reject” button.

Providing a walkthrough for one of the missions above would be in vain due to the random nature of the Mission Board. Your list of available missions is 100% different than mine.

But if you want to quickly get over it and progress the Starfield Deputized side mission, select the least rewarding available mission from the board.

Once you’ve accepted one of the four missions, access your Missions menu and set a course toward the objective.

How To Follow the Tracks To Find the Ruffians in Starfield

After finishing one or more of the listed Freestar Rangers missions, head back to The Rock in Akila City to inform Ranger Wilcox about the success of your mission.

Once you’ve finished the conversation, follow Ranger Wilcox to Marshal Daniel Blake’s office, where you will be offered the opportunity to become a Freestar Ranger Deputy.

Once you've finished the conversation, follow Ranger Wilcox to Marshal Daniel Blake's office, where you will be offered the opportunity to become a Freestar Ranger Deputy.

So, if you pledge to defend the people of the Freestar Collective, you’ll receive the following items:

  • Freestar Deputy Badge
  • Deadeye Pistol
  • Ranger Deputy Uniform
  • Deputy Hat
  • 7.5mm Whitehot (19)

After accepting the position, Ranger Wilcox will inform you of your next task as a deputy. A farmer from Montara Luna sent a distress call stating that some unknown men were ready to take her land.

To progress the Deputized mission, activate the "Travel to Waggoner Farm" objective in your Missions menu, then set course to Montara Luna in the Cheyenne system.

To progress the Deputized mission, activate the “Travel to Waggoner Farm” objective in your Missions menu, then set course to Montara Luna in the Cheyenne system, a neighboring planet to Akila.

Land your ship on the Waggoner Farm and speak with Mikaela Waggoner to find out more about the mysterious men and where they went.

Proceed to the nearby mission blue marker and investigate the boot tracks. These tracks will lead you into a canyon where you’ll encounter Swarming Sunflowers, dangerous alien creatures.

After you land your ship on the Waggoner Farm and speak with Mikaela Waggoner, proceed to the nearby mission blue marker and investigate the boot tracks.

Once you’ve defeated them, examine the tracks at the bottom of the canyon, which will guide you to the right along the canyon floor.

Keep following the trail, but be aware of land mines along the way. They have a long explosion window, so run if you see the red grenade icon and hear beeping.

As you follow the boot tracks, you will need to take out a turret and eliminate a few Pack Octomaggots that may cross your path.

After examining two more boot tracks, you’ll eventually reach the Ruffian Camp.

How To Confront the Ruffians in Deputized Faction Mission

Upon reaching the encampment, it is important to note that the Ruffians will not immediately become hostile unless you start shooting at them.

The mission marker will take you to the location of the Ruffian Leader, whom you should approach and speak with.

Although it may appear that you have the option to negotiate a peaceful resolution, all dialogue choices will eventually result in a violent confrontation.

Eliminate the Ruffians, then search the Leader’s corpse for the “Job’s Done” data slate.

Read the data slate from your inventory to learn more about the Ruffians’ affairs, then speak to Ranger Wilcox and show her the slate.

After that, fast-travel back to the Waggoner Farm and inform Ms. Waggoner that she is now safe.

Before you go, make sure to loot the camp. There is a Military Crate with a nice amount of Credits and a few valuable items.

During the debriefing with Ms. Waggoner, you will be presented with two dialogue options to conclude the conversation.

You can choose either “Just doing our job” or “Gratitude’s good, but credits are better“.

Neither dialogue option you choose will affect your reward. But if you select the second option, you will “earn” a scolding from Ranger Wilcox.

And that’s how you complete the Deputized mission and unlock the next Freestar Collective faction mission, Where Hope is Built, in the action video game developed and published by Bethesda.
