Starfield First to Fight First to Die is the seventh faction mission for the Freestar Collective, where you will uncover the identity of the person who has been targeting farmers on Montara Luna.

With the help of Alex Shadid’s decoding work on the three encrypted Slates from previous missions, the Marshal has tasked you with the mission to investigate an abandoned Freestar Mech Factory.

Unfortunately, while you investigate the Freestar Mech Factory during the First to Fight, First to Die mission, you’ll have to face literally an army of 1st Cavalry Veterans. To prepare yourself, make sure to equip your best gear and purchase extra ammo and med packs.

In this Starfield guide, you will receive detailed instructions to help you complete the First to Fight, First to Die faction mission.

How To Complete the First to Fight, First to Die Mission in Starfield

After completing the On The Run and Surgical Strike missions, go to the Meeting Room to talk with Marshal Daniel Blake and Ranger Emma Wilcox to begin the First to Fight, First to Die mission.

With no concrete leads, the conversation quickly turns to evaluation. Marshal Blake has spoken to all the Rangers you have collaborated with so far, and they have given him feedback on your performance and decision-making.

Even though you will be presented with multiple dialogue options, your decisions will not significantly impact the conversation.

After a while, Ranger Alex Shadid will interrupt the ongoing meeting to announce his success in cracking the Encrypted Slates.

He will inform you that these slates contain information about a mysterious place referred to as “the Factory.”

Alex Shadid will inform you that the slates contain information about a mysterious place referred to as "the Factory."

Then, Marshal Daniel Blake concludes that this is most likely the abandoned Freestar Mech Factory located on planet Arcturus II.

Before departing Akila City, we suggest stopping by Shepherd’s General Store, located near the entrance to the Akila City spaceport, and purchasing Ship Parts.

You can use them to repair your ship’s hull during the upcoming fight.

To reach Arcturus II, access your Starmap and search northeast of Cheyenne for the Arcturus system.

After you jump into the Arcturus system, you’ll be ambushed by two First Cavalry ships. Once you defeat this group, you’ll have to deal with two more waves.

Destroy the six starships, collect loot from their wreckage, and then use the Arcturus II planet map to land at the Freestar Mech Factory.

Once you’ve landed at the Freestar Mech Factory, it’s recommended that you activate your scanner and follow the quest marker inside.

By doing so, you’ll be able to locate nearby loot and avoid the proximity mines to prevent any unfortunate incidents.

After you get inside, defeat the few enemies and head towards the Refinery orange door.

To progress further with the First to Fight, First to Die mission in Starfield, follow the quest marker and defeat all enemies as you see fit until you reach the Assembly orange door.

Also, avoid falling into the lava while using the boost pack.

Once inside the Assembly section of the Freestar Mech Factory, head down the slope and enter the cave to the right. Defeat all the enemies and loot corpses for additional ammo and aid items.

You can also explore behind the Bypass doors and unlock the Storage rooms to find more ammo and items.

When fighting the 1st Cavalry Veterans, try to stay on high ground to evade ambushes and locate them quickly. Eventually, you will reach a large area with more challenging enemies.

After you deal with the enormous wave of enemies, reach the Operations orange door leading to the Command Center of the Mech Factory.

Beyond the door, you will face Paxton Hull alongside his army of First mercenaries.

To progress further with the First to Fight First to Die mission in Starfield, you must eliminate the boss enemy, Paxton Hull, along with their army of mercenaries.

If you manage to inflict fatal damage on Paxton Hull before clearing the room, he will enter a “downed” state. This means you’ll have to deal with the remaining First mercenaries.

However, eliminating Paxton Hull early in the fight can work in your favor. He is the second biggest threat in the room after the turrets.

When you knock out Hull, a blue mission marker will appear above the other First Cavalry Veterans, making it easier to locate them, even through walls.

How To Confront Paxton Hull in First to Fight, First to Die Mission

After defeating Paxton Hull and his mercenaries, locate Hull and interrogate him.

Regardless of your choice of dialogue, the conversation will ultimately lead to the same outcome.

Paxton Hull will confess that Ron Hope, CEO of HopeTech and Council of Governors member, is responsible for what happened to the farmers on Montara Luna.

After Paxton Hull reveals everything he knows about Ron Hope and his plans, you will be presented with the following list of dialogue options to choose from:

  • I’m bringing you in.
  • You don’t deserve to live.
After Paxton Hull reveals everything he knows about Ron Hope and his plans, you will be presented with the a two dialogue options to choose from.

Although it may appear that there are two separate paths to take, they ultimately lead to the same result.

Paxton Hull will give you the “Details of the Arrangement” slate before attacking you, forcing you to defend yourself and defeat him.

Once he’s defeated, don’t forget to loot his body for the Elevator Exit Key before searching the surrounding area for more loot.

Use the key to unlock the Loading Bay door, and you’ll be taken back to where you first encountered the First Veterans.

Congratulations on completing the First to Fight, First to Die mission and unlocking the last Freestar Collective mission, The Hammer Falls.
