Fishing in Disney Dreamlight Valley is a relaxing activity you can perform whenever you wish to get more energy or increase the amount of Star Coins in your purse.
However, the Disney Dreamlight Valley Fishing activity must be unlocked first, and even though it becomes available early in the game, mastering the fishing technique is far from easy.
Later in the game developed by Gameloft, you’ll get the chance to travel to new realms or areas where you can catch some rare species, so you’ll need to learn where to look for them and how to cast your lines properly.
Since fishing requires energy, you’ll want to make sure that you don’t waste it and end up with seaweed because your goal is to catch fish, not grass.
As such, throughout the following guide, we’ll go over this activity and share some tips and tricks that the game doesn’t tell you.
How To Unlock Fishing (Get The Fishing Rod) In Disney Dreamlight Valley
Just like in real life, fishing in Disney Dreamlight Valley requires a fishing rod, an item that is relatively easy to find if you know where to look for it.
The Disney Dreamlight Valley Fishing Rod unlocks as part of Goofy’s Fishing Expedition quest; however, there are two methods to start the said quest.
As such, if you wish to obtain the Fishing Rod as fast as possible, first, you’ll need the Pickaxe obtained while playing the Royal Tools quest we covered here.
Without the Pickaxe, you won’t be able to get the Fishing Rod simply because the latter is in the Peaceful Meadow area. If you try to visit the Peaceful Meadow south of the Plaza, you’ll see that some rocks block your access.
So, first, start the Royal Tools quest, then from the Plaza, descend the stairs, and remove the rocks blocking the path ahead using the Pickaxe.
When you enter Peaceful Meadow, you can choose how to start Goofy’s Fishing Expedition quest.
The fastest way is to get the Broken Fishing Rod that sits by a small pond near Goofy’s Stall. You should be able to see it on the right side as you enter Peaceful Meadow.

Once you get the Broken Fishing Rod, you’ll need to visit Goofy inside his house, several steps away from where you found the rod.
If by any chance you visit Goofy first, he’ll send you to find his Lucky Fishing Rod, which happens to be the Broken Fishing Rod.
This means that regardless of how you approach the quest, you’ll end up with the same Fishing Rod.
Now, after you get it, head back to Goofy, and he’ll repair it; thus, you’ll get a fully functional Fishing Rod.
Additionally, Goofy explains how to fish in Disney Dreamlight Valley, but he’ll only share with you the basics. Let’s see what Goofy doesn’t tell you.
How To Fish
Now that you know how to get the Fishing Rod, it’s worth knowing how to properly fish in Disney Dreamlight Valley because your goal is to land as much fish as possible and as big as possible.
So there are several steps you have to follow.
1. Finding A Water Source
Obviously, you need a water source to fish, and as you’ll soon find out, most, if not all, water sources have fish.
To find such a source, open your map and look for the closest pond or lake.

You should know that not all water sources in an area include the same fish species. Or simply put, different realms have different fish types, as explained below.
After finding the water source, get close to it and get ready to fish.
2. How To Equip The Fishing Rod
The next obvious step is to equip the Fishing Rod you obtained from Goofy.
To do so, open your tools inventory by pressing RT (on Xbox), then select the Fishing Rod.
You should be able to spot it at the bottom of the wheel.
Use the left thumbstick to select it, then release RT.

3. How To Catch Fish
The last step is also the most important because you’ll need to cast your line, but the results depend on where you aim.
As such, before casting your line, you’ll want to pay close attention to the water ripples or the bubbles that appear on the water’s surface.
The water ripples and the associated bubbles mark the locations of fish schools, so you’ll always want to cast your line inside them.
To do this, press and hold X, then release it. You’ll notice a small marker showing the direction of your fishing line; however, the marker always moves in a straight line, and you can’t change its direction.
Because of this, you’ll want to change your position on land accordingly before casting your line.
If done correctly, you should be able to cast your line toward the fish schools. When the marker is close to a fish school, release X.

The second important aspect you should be aware of is that water ripples have different colors. They can be white, blue, or orange, for example.
The color of a water ripple/fish school determines the size of the fish. Or simply put, common and small fish are found in white fish schools, while blue and orange fish schools allow you to catch bigger fish.

Because of this, always focus on the colored fish schools first if they are available.
In the screenshot above, you can see two different fish schools.
The white one included a 1.2 lbs Rainbow Trout, while the blue one had a 2.5 lbs Bream. So the color of the water ripples is essential in Disney Dreamlight Valley.
4. Landing A Fish
The last step in fishing is landing or pulling the fish out of the water. This step; is also connected to the color of the fish schools.
First, after casting your line, you’ll soon see three exclamation marks, denoting that a fish is near your hook. When this happens, press A once to hook it.
Next, you’ll see two circles on the water. The bigger one will move towards the smaller one, and your goal is to press A when the central circle turns green.
What you should know, though, is that for bigger fish species, you’ll need to press A more than once without missing any of the QTEs (quick-time events).
For example, if you target a blue fish school, you’ll need to complete 3 QTEs in a row, and the speed of these quick-time events increases. So, make sure you are ready and pay close attention to the green circle.

Fishing Companions
While you can’t use any fishing bait in Disney Dreamlight Valley, you can increase the amount of fish you catch using Fishing Companions.
For better results, you’ll always want to have a Fishing Companion by your side when fishing because they’ll provide you with additional fish every time you catch one.
Disney Dreamlight Valley Companions become available when you reach Friendship Level 2 with a specific character, so you’ll need to Level Up your Friendship Levels.
After you reach Level 2, you can assign various roles to specific characters. For example, Goofy below is a Fishing Companion.

To make a Companion join your fishing trips, approach a character with a Fishing Role activated, then choose Let’s hang out, and he’ll accompany you.
When you successfully catch a fish with a Fishing Companion by your side, you’ll see him drop some fish. As you can guess, you’ll want to level up your Companion as much as possible for better rewards.
Fish Locations
As mentioned, Disney Dreamlight Valley features various Fish Species available at launch, with more to be added later.
The fish types have specific areas where you can catch them, and they have different prices. Furthermore, if you decide to eat them, you’ll get different amounts of energy.
To check the available fish species and their location in Disney Dreamlight Valley, open your collection, and navigate to the fish tab.
Now, scroll over one of the fish types and look at the bottom of the screen for additional details.

How To Use The Fish
The fish you catch in Disney Dreamlight Valley can be used in multiple ways, depending on what you try to achieve.
For example, if you are low on energy, you can open your backpack and eat a fish. As shown in the table above, each fish restores a specific amount of energy if consumed raw.
Alternatively, you can opt to use the fish in Cooking, thus being able to restore even more energy.
Furthermore, you can sell the fish at one of Goofy’s Stalls. Goofy’s Stalls, as you may remember from the Fishing Expedition quest, must be restored, but early in the game, you’ll get access to the first one for free as part of the said quest.
Last but not least, you can gift specific fish species by talking to the various characters.
Again, as an example, if you talk to Goofy below and tell him, I have something to give you, you’ll see his favorite things or items he loves the most.
In the following screenshot, you can see that he loves Oysters and Tilapia. By gifting him his favorite things, you’ll level up his Friendship Level. And the items change daily.

Besides the fact that it is relaxing, the Disney Dreamlight Valley Fishing activity is also very productive, so take your time to learn it well, and you’ll be able to level up faster and also become quite rich.
