Updated November 23, 2022

Song Of The Sands is a God Of War Ragnarok Favour you can complete in The Forbidden Sands area, and it’s very similar to the Secret Of The Sands Side Quest from The Barrens area of Alfheim.

This means you’ll once again have to set free a Hafgufa to clear the sandstorm in The Forbidden Sands region.

God Of War Ragnarok Song Of The Sands Favor is a bit shorter than the Secret Of The Sands, yet mandatory if you want to get 100% completion in The Forbidden Sands (covered in-depth here).

While playing it, you’ll also get access to The Burrows, an underground location similar to The Below we fully explored.

So, if you need help finishing this Side Quest, make sure you follow our God Of War Ragnarok Song Of The Sands walkthrough below.

How To Start Song Of The Sands In Alfheim

GoW Ragnarok Song Of The Sands starts automatically the moment you enter The Forbidden Sands; however, there are several requirements you have to meet to reach the desert area west of The Barrens.

First, you’ll need to complete the Secret Of The Sands, and the 6th Main Quest named The Reckoning.

By finishing The Reckoning, you can start The Elven Sanctum Favour by talking to Beyla and Byggvir in Frey’s Camp in Vanaheim, thus being able to open the gate towards The Forbidden Sands.

Finally, you must travel to The Canyons Mystic Gateway. Here, you should deal with The Canyons collectibles first, then follow the passage northeast toward The Barrens.

Make sure you clear all Barrens collectibles and activities available, then head northwest again to reach a large gate that leads into The Hjarta canyon. Ask your companion to help you open it by interacting with the chisel.

Since there are no essential items in The Hjarta, keep heading west to enter The Forbidden Sands.

When you finally reach The Forbidden Sands, you’ll face another sandstorm, and The Song Of The Sands Favour is triggered.

Now, you’ll be asked to find the Hafgufa cave entrance northwest of The Hjarta canyon.

While on the sled, keep moving northwest and look for a rather large rock. Go around until you see two torches by the entrance (pictured).

How To Reach The Hafgufa

Upon entering the passage, head to the lower level, then use your companion’s Sonic Arrows (green) to destroy the shields blocking the path.

Now you’ll enter The Burrows, and you’ll want to swing over the gap in front of you (not the one on the left).

Since we won’t go over The Burrows collectibles (we’ve covered them here), keep pushing forward, and after you drop another ledge, you’ll see some brown Hive Matter on the left side.

The brown Hive Matter is sensitive to sound, so shoot a Sonic Arrow, then shoot another one at the metal plates behind it.

Continue through the passage on the right side using the grappling points, then swing over the large gap until you get to the grappling point on the left side. From here, you can drop to the ledge below and claim a Red Chest.

Return to the upper grappling point, head right around the wall, and continue following the linear path.

Eventually, you’ll reach another brown Matter, but this one can’t be destroyed by Sonic Arrows.

So while facing it (pictured below), aim your axe at the Twilight Stone on the ground and throw it when the trajectory line turns blue.

Descend to the next floor now and keep pushing forward to find a nest you must destroy. After clearing the passage, use the grappling point above the nest you destroyed, and you’ll reach a large cave.

Once you deal with all enemies, check the lower level for a crack in the wall (pictured).

Follow the tunnel behind, then drop to the next area. Now head left, and on the left side of the large Hive Matter, you’ll see a smaller one you can open using the Sonic Arrows.

Shoot it, then quickly throw your axe at the Twilight Stone behind so that your axe can ricochet into the large Hive Matter (pictured below).

Now that the path is clear, keep following the tunnel ahead, moving from one grappling point to another until you have to climb down another wall.

Once you deal with the enemies in the next cave, climb the wall on the other side, where you should see a purple light.

In the next tunnel, you’ll see some red glowing sacks you must destroy to remove the roots ahead.

While facing the first one on the left, drop one level (left side of the tunnel), then move around to see the sacks above aligned.

The idea here is to destroy all of them in a single axe throw.

Retrace your steps back to the upper floor and follow the tunnel ahead to find the Hafgufa.

How To Destroy The Hafgufa’s Bindings

To release the Hafgufa in God Of War Ragnarok Song Of The Sands, you must destroy the bindings.

Immediately when you reach the creature’s location, turn left and find the Twilight Stone on the other side of the gap.

Aim for it and throw your Leviathan Axe to destroy the brown Matter and clear a grappling point.

Swing across; then, on the left side, you’ll see another Hive Matter gate you can open using your companion’s Sonic Arrows (green).

When the gate opens, throw your charged Leviathan Axe at the Twilight Stone behind (pictured below) to destroy the second Hafgufa Binding.

Next, swing over the gap, and you’ll see more red sacks above.

This time, charge Kratos’s Leviathan Axe and throw it when the glowing red roots are aligned.

Finally, go over the gap again, and on the right side, you’ll see the final binding (pictured below).

Make sure you charge your axe if needed.

Now that you removed the bindings, it’s time to release the creature by finding her cage.

How To Open The Hive Cage

From your current location, jump over the hole on the right side and follow the path ahead to drop into a cave where you can see one of the 53 God of War Ragnarok Legendary Chests.

Once you deal with all enemies and claim the loot, climb the wall on the right side of the chest.

In the next cave, climb the wall on the other side, then use the grappling points to ascend all the way to an upper ledge where you can see several Twilight Stones and Hive Matter walls.

Aim for the Twilight Stone on the left side and throw your axe, which will ricochet into the Twilight Stone below, then into the Hive Matter wall.

God Of War Ragnarok Song Of The Sands Puzzle Solution

Behind the Hive Matter wall is a grappling point you can use to climb further.

Upon reaching the ledge above (with a Red Chest), you’ll need to solve another puzzle. Start by rotating the golden device on the right side. Shoot the round plates until the Twilight Stone on the device is facing left.

Now throw the Leviathan Axe at the Twilight Stone on the left side, and it will ricochet into the Twilight Stone that’s on the device, then into the Hive Matter on the left side.

Use the grappling point behind the Hive Matter to climb the wall, then smash into the stone wall to reach the starting area in The Burrows.

After dealing with the Elf waiting for you, follow the tunnel again, and you’ll return to the surface.

Once you exit The Burrows, you’ll need to open the cage from the outside. Hop on your sled and head southwest, looking for a red glowing root like the one below.

Approach the root and cut it by mashing the O button.

Great job! Now the Forbidden Sands Hafgufa is free, and the sandstorm is gone, so you can explore the area and complete more Favours.
