Bane is a status effect in Baldur’s Gate 3. It’s not too common, but it can be quite bothersome and have a significant impact on your gameplay. This condition affects your character by imposing a penalty of -1d4 to your Attack Rolls and Saving Throws. This means your character will perform poorly during fights and will be more vulnerable to other negative effects.
In this BG3 guide, I will explain a few ways you can get afflicted with the Bane condition and walk you through the process of removing this status effect as easily as possible.
The Causes of Bane Condition in BG3
In Baldur’s Gate 3, the Bane status effect can be inflicted on your character in a few different ways. Most of these situations are related to items associated with The Absolute. Here are some ways you can acquire this condition:
- Equipping the Gloves of Power without the Mark of Absolute. The Mark of the Absolute can be obtained from Priestess Gut in Goblin Camp.
- Using the Absolute Warboard to cast Absolute’s Protection on your team without everyone having the Mark of The Absolute. Doing so will inflict the Bane status on characters who do not have the mark.
- Drinking Auntie Ethel’s potions in her basement: Some of her unique potions can give the Bane status effect. It’s usually best to avoid these.
- Breaking the cursed mirror in Auntie Ethel’s basement in the Teahouse. Even though you haven’t messed with items associated with The Absolute, you can still get stricken with this condition if you break Auntie Ethel’s cursed mirror.
How To Cure Bane in BG3
If your character has been afflicted with Bane, do not worry. There are two primary methods of curing this status effect:
- Taking a Long Rest
- Using the Remove Curse Spell
Taking a Long Rest to Cure Bane
To take a Long Rest, simply tap the campfire icon on the right side of your screen. Then, tap the crescent icon to teleport your character and companions to the Campsite area instantly. Finally, interact with the campfire/bedroll there to begin your Long Rest.
It’s important to note that taking a Long Rest will end the current day and start a new one. This might affect any timed quests or activities you’re currently involved in, as they could come to an end when you wake up the next day. However, a Long Rest comes with plenty of benefits. It will restore all your health, cure any conditions or status effects, and recharge all your spells and abilities.
Using Remove Curse Spell to Cure Bane
The Remove Curse is a Level 3 Abjuration Spell that can instantly remove the Bane status effect. It becomes available at Level 5 for Clerics, Warlocks, and Wizards. This spell can help you get rid of the condition quickly. But here’s a friendly tip: if you want to save your spell slot, it might be better to just take a Long Rest instead.
Remember, the Mark of Absolute is the key to avoiding the Bane condition. This mark prevents Bane from being applied to your characters when using items associated with The Absolute. Without the mark, you risk inflicting your character with this status effect.
