Baldur’s Gate 3 Defiled Temple Stone Discs is a moderate-level puzzle that is neither too easy nor too difficult. After the problematic encounter with Priestess Gut and further exploration around the Shattered Sanctum will lead to the Defiled Temple beneath the Goblin Camp.
There, a sliding floor puzzle must be solved to access the Underdark and complete Shadowheart’s questline. So, follow our in-depth Baldur’s Gate 3 guide to learn how to solve the Defiled Temple Stone Discs puzzle in two different and easy-to-follow ways.
Where To Find the BG3 Defiled Temple Stone Discs Puzzle
The Defiled Temple is located on the west side of Shattered Sanctum in BG3. You will have to explore the Sanctum in order to complete the following two quests:
- Save the First Druid
- Find the Nightsong
After passing the goblin guards, head west up the stairs left from the big altar.

There are two options. You can try to lockpick the door, which leads to Priestess Gut’s room. If you have already interacted with her, the door will be open. The other option will be to use the Jump action to jump over the gap on the right where the wall is crumbled.
You will come across a locked door in Priestess Gut’s room, which you can open using a lockpick to enter the Defiled Temple. Inside the Defiled Temple, there’s an ogre named Polma, the High Priestess’ bodyguard, patrolling the room. You can try to sneak past Polma, persuade him that you’re authorized to be here, bribe him with gold or take him down.

To reach the BG3 Defiled Temple Stone Discs puzzle, enter the first archway on the left and then the second archway. There is also an alternative way to access the Defiled Temple, but it requires a small character, like a gnome, halfling, or Druid, who can transform into a raven or a cat.

Now, let’s see how to solve the Defiled Temple Moon puzzle in Baldur’s Gate 3.
How To Solve the Defiled Temple Stone Discs Puzzle in Baldur’s Gate III
On the floor are four intersecting stone discs with black and white dots – eight white and four black- representing the moon’s phases. The objective is to move all the black dots toward the bottom (southern) disc, which is illuminated.
Before solving the puzzle, it is recommended to drag the solver’s portrait on the left side of the screen and separate them from the party. The party members may step in your way while solving the puzzle. To solve the BG3 Defiled Temple Stone Discs puzzle, rotate the disks in the following sequence:
- Spin the north disc once.
- Spin the west disc three times.
- Spin the south disc once.
- Spin the west disc once.
- Spin the east disc two times.
- Spin the south disc once.
- Spin the east disc two times.
- Spin the south disc three times.
- Spin the west disc once.

There is an alternative solution to the Defiled Temple puzzle – a successful passive perception check by walking up the stairs in the back of the room. If your character’s automatic perception check is successful, your character will mention “Something over there.” This will reveal a lever on the side of a staircase, as shown in the image below.
Use the Priestess’ Key or lockpick the lever using the Thieves’ Tools to open the secret door. Make sure to save the game before attempting to lockpick the lever since you’ll have to roll a D15 to open the secret door successfully. Doing so allows you to try again without wasting too many Thieves’ Tools.
