Baldur’s Gate 3 features many NPCs like Philomeen, who possess an important item that can help you complete the Free True Soul Nere quest. You can start this quest when you reach Grymforge. True Soul Nere and a few gnomes are trapped behind a cave and don’t have much time.

When you speak to the mining gnomes around the Cave-In, they tell you to find Philomeen, a deep gnome who escaped from the Duergars due to their cruelty.

She took the Runepowder barrel to prepare and fight against them to free her people. The gnomes miners cannot help locate Philomeen but will share information on Runepowder. This Baldur’s Gate III guide will detail Philomeen’s location, how to reach her, and potential dialogue outcomes in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Where to Find BG3 Philomeen Hiding Spot

After speaking with the gnomes miners near the Cave-In, it’s time to find Philomeen. She can be found in the northeastern part of Grymforge, as indicated on the map below.

Philomeen Hiding Spot can be found in the northeastern part of Grymforge.

To reach her location, fast travel to the Underdark – Grymforge Waypoint and take the stairs down to the east. Proceed along the water until you reach a locked Double Iron Door. You’ll also see two Duergars men throwing multiple bodies into the water. Unlock the door using your character with the highest dexterity to ensure a successful Sleight of Hand.

Lockpick the Double Iron Doors near the two Duergars throwing bodies into the water.

Before entering the room, make a quicksave by pressing F5 in case every party member fails the upcoming perception check. Upon unlocking the door, move to the far left of the room and pass a perception check to reveal a hidden button that opens a secret door into the wall.

Proceed through the secret door to find yourself in a small corridor with two Double Iron Doors. Head through any door, and you will find a set of stairs to your right. You will perform another perception check as three Level 5 Ochre Jellies will ambush you from the ceiling. They are resistant to slashing damage but vulnerable to piercing and bludgeoning damage or ranged weapons. Also, avoid the acid on the floor.

Defeat the three Level 5 Ochre Jellies and head up the stairs to reach the entrance to the Philomeen Hiding Spot.

After defeating the Ochre Jellies, go up the stairs and follow the path until you reach a cliff’s edge with a chasm in front of you.

Jump over the chasm and proceed ahead. You’ll come across a locked Intricate Door, but you don’t need to unlock it. Instead, head to the left of the door and find a large hole in the wall. Enter the chamber to find Philomeen at the very end of it.

Baldur’s Gate III Philomeen Dialogue Choices & Outcomes

When you find Philomeen, approach her to start a dialogue. She’ll threaten to explode herself and the Runepowder because she thinks the Nere sent you to capture her. During the dialogue, you will encounter several ability checks. Choose the ones that align with your character’s skills to have a better chance of calming Philomeen.

Choose the dialogue ability check that align with your character's skills to have a better chance of calming Philomeen.

Once Philomeen no longer sees you as a threat, she will give you the Runepowder Vile. It may not be much, but it will suffice to open the Cave-In. Return with the Runepowder Vile to the gnome miners and place it near the rubble. Wait for everyone to step back and shoot a fire-based missile (such as Fire Bolt on Gale or Astarion) to make the vile explode.

Place the Runepowder near the Cave-In and shoot a Fire Bolt at it to make it explode.

But if Philomeen isn’t calmed down, she’ll cause an explosion that will destroy all the runepowder, injuring or killing your party members in the process. However, there are other stashes of the explosive powder, such as Smokepowder Satchels. Check our Find Explosives quest guide to learn where to find them.
