When you start your first playthrough of Baldur’s Gate 3, one of the initial challenges you may face is figuring out how to open the Ancient Door on the Ravaged Beach. The Ancient Door is locked from the outside and can become the first puzzle to solve.
Luckily, we have prepared a brief guide on how to open the Ancient Door located in the Overgrown Ruins. This Baldur’s Gate 3 guide will provide you with step-by-step instructions to help you through the process.
Where To Find the Ancient Door in Baldur’s Gate III
The Ancient Door can be found in the northern part of the Ravaged Beach, next to the Overgrown Ruins Waypoint. When attempting to open the door, you will receive a prompt indicating that it is locked, with no indication of how to unlock it.
As such, let’s see how to quickly open this door without wasting any more time.
How To Unlock the BG3 Overgrown Ruins Ancient Door
The most straightforward method to unlock Ancient Door is to use Thieves’ Tools to lockpick the door open. After completing the Prologue of Baldur’s Gate 3, you’ll crash with the Nautiloid ship that has taken you captive on the Ravaged Beach. If you rescued Shadowheart from the Mind Flyer Pod on the ship, you’ll find her unconscious on the sand.
Once you’ve woken her up, you’ll find a few steps north a Wooden Barrel containing a Trap Disarm Toolkit, Thieves’ Tools, and Tongs. The set of Thieves’ Tools is the one we are looking for.
Grab all the loot and head back to the Ancient Door near the Overgrown Ruins Waypoint. To lockpick the door, hover the cursor over the door, right-click to open up the sub-menu, and you’ll see the option to do so. Before attempting to lockpick the door, we recommended making a quick save, and we will explain in a second why.
To open the door with this method, you’ll need to roll a D20 and achieve a score of 20 or higher. This task is challenging, especially if you’re not a highly dexterous character. So, because you have only one set of Thieves’ Tools, it means you have only one chance to lockpick the door. However, this is where the previously saved game comes into play.
In case you fail to roll a D20 or higher, you can always load the previous save game to try again. You can do this until you successfully roll a D20.
If you have already used the Thieves’ Tools, there is still a way for you to enter, but it will require you to take a longer route. You must climb up to the highest point of the Overgrown Ruins through the crashed Nautiloid ship. Once you get to the top, you will encounter some tomb raiders that you will have to deal with.
After they are no longer a threat, you can enter the Overgrown Ruins either by using the nearby door or by shooting a rock down to create a hole in the already cracked floor.
This will take you inside the Overgrown Ruins! There’s a lot in here – including several fights and hidden treasures. The Ancient Door you tried to get through earlier can be found in the large Sarcophagus room that also holds a trap puzzle for you to solve to collect its treasure in the deeper part of the ruins.
From the inside, it’s far easier to lockpick open. You can also find the Heavy Key on one of the skeletons inside the Dank Crypt, which you can use to open the Ancient Door. That’s everything you need to know on how to open the Ancient Door in Baldur’s Gate 3. If you liked this guide, make sure to check our Wiki Hub Page for more helpful guides.
