As you make your way through the Underdark, you’ll eventually reach the Myconid Colony, a community of ambulatory fungus creatures. While exploring the Myconid Colony, you’ll come across a gate made of vines called the Guardian Gate.
If you try to lockpick the Guardian Gate, you’ll receive a prompt saying that lockpicking is impossible as there is obviously no lock. As such, in the following BG3 guide, we will explain how to unlock the Underdark Guardian Gate in Baldur’s Gate 3.
Where to Find the BG3 Guardian Gate in Ebonlake Grotto
The Guardian Gate can be found in the Ebonlake Grotto area west of the Myconid Colony Waypoint in the Underdark region. You can find the Guardian Gate at the following coordinates: (X: 53, Y: -91).
Once we’ve located the gate, let’s see what we need to open it.
How To Open the Underdark Guardian Gate
In order to open the Guardian Gate in Ebonlake Grotto, you must complete a quest for the Sovereign Spaw called Defeat the Duergar Intruders. To find the Sovereign Spaw, fast-travel to the Myconid Colony Waypoint and climb the nearby giant red mushrooms all the way to the top.
When you speak with him, he will ask you to eliminate the Duergar who have terrorized the Underdark. If you decide to handle those duergar nearby, you’ll initiate the Defeat the Duergar Intruders quest. To find and kill the duergar intruders led by Gekh Coal, you must make your way to the Underdark Beach southwest of the Myconid Colony, as shown in the image below.
They are at the following coordinates (X: 17, Y: 199). When you arrive at the marked location, it is recommended to approach Gekh Coal calmly and listen to what he has to say. He will explain that a slave named Thulla stole the shoes belonging to one of the Duergar sergeants.
If you accept to help Gekh Coal, you will trigger the Find the Missing Boots quest and set you on the path to recover the lost boots. Now that we’ve made Gekh Coal believe that we are allies, you can locate all four Duergar intruders around the ruins of this settlement and place your party members in key locations to easily take them down.
For example, you can quickly shove Novice Garmor on the docks into the water and kill him instantly. Nobody will notice he’s missing.
Make sure to enter Turn-Based Mode and use a companion with high strength (such as Karlach or Lae’zel) before shoving him to increase your chances of success. After you deal with all the duergar intruders, including Gekh Coal, don’t forget to loot their corpses.
When you loot Gekh Coal’s corpse, you’ll find the Duergar Antidote, a special item you can use to cure Thulla during the Cure the Poisoned Gnome quest to receive the missing boots for the Duergar sergeant. Yes, you can still complete the Find the Missing Boots quest, even though you killed Gekh Coal and his friends.
Now, get back to Mycolid Colony to talk with Sovereign Spaw in Baldur’s Gate 3 to progress the Defeat the Duergar Intruders quest. Upon talking to Sovereign Spaw, he will give you the title of “Peacebringer” and open the Guardian Door leading to a treasure room with your rewards for saving the Underdark. You’ll also be given another task called Deliver Nere’s Head.
In this treasure room, you can loot several alchemical ingredients, scrolls, the Shadow of Menzoberranzan helmet, and the Flumph Mating Rituals book off the pale corpse. Upon reading the Flumph Mating Rituals, you’ll trigger The Adamantine Forge quest and learn the steps of how to use the forge to create unique items. And that’s how you open the Underdark Guardian Gate in Baldur’s Gate III. If you have trouble completing a quest or solving a puzzle, you can visit our BG3 Wiki Hub page for additional help.
