Baldur’s Gate 3 Soft-Step Trial is the first trial out of three you’ll have to tackle in the Gauntlet of Shar. The BG3 Soft-Step Trial is a stealth-oriented trial where you must make your way through a maze without being spotted by the patrolling Shadows.

I understand that it may seem easier said than done, but don’t worry. I am here to help! So, here are some strategies for passing the Gauntlet of Shar Soft-Step Trial in Baldur’s Gate 3 without triggering the Shadows.

Where To Find the BG3 Gauntlet of Shar Soft-Step Trial

The Soft-Step Trial is located northwest of the Gauntlet of Shar waypoint, behind a Bulky Door.

To reach the Gauntlet of Shar waypoint, you must enter and solve the Grand Mausoleum puzzle located in the far northeastern corner of the Shadow-Cursed Lands. Once inside the Gauntlet of Shar, you must solve the Umbral Gem puzzle by interacting with the four levers and the eight Mystic Thuribles around the room. Please refer to our guide to avoid triggering the traps.

Head into the next room and defeat the Umbral Tremors and Dark Justiciars to clear the area. Go down the stairs to activate the Gauntlet of Shar waypoint, then turn right into the corridor and head north. Look for the first door on the west side of the corridor. A plaque on the floor before the door reads “Her Most Vaunted Treasure“.

BG3 Soft-Step Trial Entrance

After going through the Bulky Door, let’s see how to complete the Gauntlet of Shar Soft-Step Trial in Baldur’s Gate III.

How To Solve the Soft-Step Trial Puzzle in Gauntlet of Shar

Before getting started, splitting someone from your party who’s good at hiding and picking locks is recommended. Grab the Scroll of Invisibility from the Skeleton on the southern bench to make the Soft-Step Trial a walk in the park. Using the scroll lowers your chances of being spotted by the Shadows.

Once ready, interact with the Sacrificial Bowl and make a blood sacrifice to start the Soft-Step Trial. Use the Scroll of Invisibility and enter stealth mode by pressing C, then enter the northmost door to the right of the Sacrificial Bowl.

Also, check your mini-map to keep an eye on the Shadows patrolling the maze. Go straight down the hallway and press the button on the northern (right) wall.

Walk straight down the hallway and press the button on the wall to your right.

After the wall lowers, go ahead in this hallway, through the archway, and climb the stairs to reach the Wrought-Iron Gate. You’ll need to use Thieves’ Tools to lockpick and open the Wrought-Iron Gate and claim your reward for finishing the Soft-Step Trial: an Umbral Gem.

To unlock and open the Wrought-Iron Gate and receive your reward for completing the Soft-Step Trial, you'll need to use Thieves' Tools.

After picking up the Umbral Gem, all iron torches in the room light up, and an Umbral Transporter will appear where you picked up the gem. Use the Umbral Transporter to teleport to the Sacrificial Bowl outside the maze.

And that’s how you complete the Gauntlet of Shar Soft-Step Trial in Baldur’s Gate 3. However, you still have two more trials to pass: the Self-Same Trial and the Faith-Leap Trial. Also, make sure to visit our Wiki Hub Page for more helpful guides about the game.
