Balthazar, the powerful necromancer in Baldur’s Gate 3, throws players into a tricky situation with a crucial decision to make. They must choose between helping him or confronting him. This guide analyzes the options available, detailing different paths and strategies for defeating Balthazar in BG3.
Where is Balthazar in BG3
Balthazar is an undead necromancer who serves General Ketheric Thorm. He is on a mission to retrieve the Nightsong, a relic that grants Ketheric immortality. You can first encounter Balthazar in the Gauntlet of Shar during Act Two of Baldur’s Gate 3.
To find him, head over to the Thorm Mausoleum (X:-188 Y: 109) in the Shadow-Cursed Lands. Solve the Grand Mausoleum Puzzle inside to unlock the entrance to Gauntlet of Shar. Then, you must solve the Gauntlet of Shar Umbral Gem Puzzle by turning off the eight purple lanterns. Finally, head west from the Gauntlet of Shar Waypoint to reach BG3 Balthazar’s room at the following coordinates (X: -849 Y: -785).
Behind a locked door, guarded by his undead servants, you’ll find Balthazar. But before you can meet with him, you’ll have to face off against the Justiciar Avengers and his undead servants in a combat encounter. Defeat them first, and then you’ll be able to have your meeting with him.
BG3: When To Kill Balthazar
There are multiple opportunities for you to interact with Balthazar throughout the game. One option is to help him in his mission to find the Nightsong during Find Ketheric Thorm’s Relic Quest. By choosing to help Balthazar, you can obtain valuable items for survival.
The Summon Golem Bell is one such item that can be acquired. This unique bell summons a Flesh Golem, which aids players in navigating the Gauntlet of Shar. Another item that can be obtained by helping Balthazar is the Moonlantern. This quest item protects you from the Shadow Curse in the Shadowlands area during Act Two.
Alternatively, you can choose to attack and defeat Balthazar. This decision allows you to loot his body and obtain rare and valuable items. The Circle of Bones, the Warped Headband of Intellect, and the Animate Dead spell are among the treasures that can be obtained by defeating Balthazar.
I suggest helping Balthazar in his quest to find Ketheric Thorm’s Relic. You’ll have the opportunity to decide Nightsong’s fate, so make sure to take advantage of it and kill Balthazar when the time comes.
How To Defeat Balthazar in BG3
When engaging in combat with Balthazar, it is important to consider his strengths and weaknesses. He is weak in close combat, so you should exploit this vulnerability. You should also be prepared to face additional enemies summoned by Balthazar, such as skeletons and golems. To inflict maximum damage, use spells with area-of-effect, such as Fireball, to effectively target multiple enemies.
In terms of abilities, potions, and spells, certain choices can prove advantageous when facing Balthazar. Using Silence or Counterspell can prevent him from casting spells. It is important to note that Balthazar excels in ranged attacks, so maintaining close proximity to him is crucial for launching immediate attacks and evading ranged attacks.
Consider using spells such as Warding Bonds and Bless to enhance defense and deal extra damage. Spells like Radiance of the Dawn, Dissonant Whispers, and Fireball can also be effective in weakening Balthazar and his hoard.
Easiest Way To Kill Balthazar
If you are looking for a different approach, there is an alternative method to defeat Balthazar without engaging in direct combat. However, it should be noted that this method will not yield any rewards. Towards the end of Act Two, near Nightsong, you can attempt to push him into the abyss using abilities like Shove or Gust of Wind.
This method allows you to bypass the boss fight entirely but comes at the cost of missing out on valuable loot dropped by Balthazar in Baldur’s Gate 3.
