Baldur’s Gate 3 Gnarled Door is a unique door in the Overgrown Tunnel, and its puzzle is just one of the many challenges you will encounter in the game. When you try to open the BG3 Gnarled Door in the Entrance Gallery area of the Overgrown Tunnel, the story will change based on the choices you will about to make.
If you’re looking for ways to pass through the Gnarled Door during your quest to save Mayrina from Auntie Ethel, you’ve come to the right place. As such, we have created a detailed guide on how to open and pass through the Overgrown Tunnel Gnarled door in Baldur’s Gate 3.
Where To Find the Gnarled Door in Baldur’s Gate III
While exploring the Sunlit Wetlands forest, you will encounter Auntie Ethel arguing with Mayrina’s brothers. Initially, she may not seem hostile, but once you realize she’s holding Mayrina captive, she’ll try to escape, triggering the Saving Mayrina quest.
To find the Gnarled Door in Baldur’s Gate 3, you need to go to the Gnarled Teahouse and find Auntie Ethel. You’ll also learn that Mayrina’s brothers are now dead. When you enter Gnarled Teahouse, you’ll find Auntie Ethel and Mayrina.
After you speak with her and choose not to take her side, you’ll have to fight her. Be well-prepared since she’s not someone to trifle with. Once you’ve depleted half of her HP, she will escape through the fireplace in the room. Go through this fireplace and interact with the Wooden Stairs to enter the Overgrown Tunnel, where you’ll find the Gnarled Door alongside a bunch of her prisoners.
How To Unlock the Entrance Gallery Gnarled Door in BG3
Baldur’s Gate 3 is designed to provide a personalized experience, with multiple options for passing through Gnarled Door. Therefore, there are two possible ways through which you can get past the door.
The door is an illusion to keep Auntie Ethel safe. Interact with the door to take an Arcane-based test. If you pass the test, the door reveals itself as an illusion. Before attempting the Arcane-based test, save the game to try again in case you fail.
Then, position the camera to see beyond the door and click on the ground to get you and your party members across the Gnarled Door in BG3.
There is another method to pass through the Gnarled Door, but it is much more dangerous and not recommended. To the right of the door are four Whispering Masks imbued with Ethel’s dark energy, which can be used to control the wearer.
When approaching the door in Baldur’s Gate III, put a Whispering Mask on one of your characters. After passing through the Gnarled Door, your character must make Wisdom Saving Throws against Auntie Ethel’s Ephemeral Whispers.
Failing the save results in losing control of the character, who will fight against the rest of the party. One way to prevent mind control is by having someone wear a mask with a high Wisdom score and proficiency in Wisdom Saving Throws, such as a Druid.
However, this only increases the chance of avoiding mind control and relies on luck. After going through the door into the next room, removing the mask will make Auntie Ethel’s Thralls hostile. Leaving the Whispering Mask on your character will stop the four Thralls from attacking the wearer, but it requires making rolls against Ephemeral Whispers. You have to lose something to win something.
