Baldur’s Gate 3 Scuffed Rock Ornate Chest is one of the many hidden treasures you can find while exploring the vast world known as Faerûn, and one of the secrets that can be easily missed if you don’t know where to look for it.

Besides being relatively hard to spot, the BG3 Scuffed Rock Chest contains a key item called Harper’s Map, which details the location of a hidden treasure or cache. The said treasure, or Harper’s Cache if you want, requires a bit of legwork, but due to its contents, it is one of the secret treasures you don’t want to miss.

The problem is that you must deal with the Scuffed Rock to open Baldur’s Gate 3 Ornate Chest and obtain Harper’s Map. Therefore throughout the following guide, we’ll tell you where to find the Scuffed Rock, how to use your characters’ abilities to get it out of the way, and where to find Harper’s Treasure.

Where To Find the Baldur’s Gate III Scuffed Rock

The Scuffed Rock hiding the Ornate Chest is found on the western side of the Ravaged Beach; you’ll explore after the Prologue. As you can see on the map below, it’s only several steps west of where you find Astarion, in a small cave by the water.

The Scuffed Rock is found on the western side of the Ravaged Beach

But to get to the cave and the rock in question, you must perform a specific action. As such, start by recruiting Astarion, then head west towards the water, looking for a lower platform leading to the cave pictured below.

While standing at the edge of the hill, select one of your characters, then click on the Jump button (also pictured below) to get to the lower platform. In the distance, you should see the Scuffed Rock I have marked in the following screenshot.

To get to the Scuffed Rock, use the jump action.

As you get close to the Ravaged Beach Suffed Rock, you’ll notice that you can interact with it; however, you’ll be able to do this only if your characters’ Nature Skill is high enough.

How To Move The Baldur’s Gate 3 Ravaged Beach Suffed Rock

Assuming your main character’s Nature Skill is high enough, then all you need to do to move the Baldur’s Gate III Scuffed Rrock is click on it, and while holding down the left button of your mouse, drag the rock away from its location. Simply drag and drop it to reveal an Ornate Chest.

Move the Scuffed Rock to reveal an ornate chest.

It is worth knowing, though, that to move the rock; you’ll also need a character with at least 17 Strength Points. Such as Shadowheart you saved in the game’s Prologue. Assuming you can’t interact with the Scuffed Rock, you’ll need a character with a high Nature Skill, such as Gale, who is found near the Roadside Cliffs Waypoint.

Specifically, northeast of your current location. Gale is trapped within a portal, and once you recruit him, you can return to the Scuffed Rock; however, you’ll only need him if you can’t interact with the boulder. After moving the Scuffed Rock in the image above, you’ll find an Ornate Chest containing the following items:

  • Harper’s Notebook
  • Ruby
  • Harper’s Map
  • Potion of Speed
  • 15 Gold
  • Bloodstone

The Ornate Chest, as you can see, contains an impressive treasure, but you are not done yet because if you read Harper’s Map by clicking on it in your inventory, you’ll start a small Treasure Hunt. Let’s see what you have to do next.

Harper’s Map Treasure Location

Start by opening your inventory and double-click on Harper’s Map, which reads:

“This stained, ragged map has passed through countless hands. A little harp marks an area called Moonrise Towers, with a small inky crescent sketched in the nearby forest. Below the crescent is a more recent scrawl: CACHE.”

If you wonder where to find Harper’s Treasure in Baldur’s Gate 3, the answer is north of your current location. The treasure’s location is pinpointed on your map after you read Harper’s Map.

To get it, return to the hill where you found Astarion using the Jump button, then enter the Mind Flayer shipwreck. Once inside, move north through the door blocked by flames. Since you have Gale in your party, you can quickly extinguish the fire using his Ray of Frost Spell.

Keep moving north, following the path in the forest until you trigger a combat sequence between some Goblins and Elves. Assisting the Elves and defeating the Goblins is mandatory to progress through the forest. After you deal with all Goblins, without approaching the gate, head south on your minimap, looking for a cragged rock such as the one below.

Use the Cragged Rock to climb on the hill.

To get to the Cragged Rock, approach the mountain’s wall, then use the Jump ability. Now, climb the Cragged Rock, and you’ll find a small ladder on top of the hill. Climb it, and you’ll reach the peak of the hill, where you’ll see a small camp. Here, you’ll want to start looting all objects, including the skeleton pictured below, the barrels, and the chest on the wooden platform.

To find Harper's Treasure, loot the skeleton by the fire.

Harper’s Treasure is the Silver Pendant you can get by looting the skeleton near the campfire.
