Elden Ring Church Of Dragon Communion or the Limgrave southwestern island is a location you can visit early in the game, even though you may not be able to use the Church Of Dragon Communion Altar right away. Nevertheless, the Church Of Dragon Communion Altar is essential when it comes to unlocking incantations for your character.
Furthermore, there are some items and crafting materials you should get while visiting the Elden Ring island, and throughout the guide below, we’ll cover everything you need to know about this landmark.
How To Get To the Church of Dragon Communion Island
The Elden Ring Church Of Dragon Communion island is southwest of Limgrave, as you can see on the map below.

As you probably noticed by now, in the video game developed by FromSoftware, your character can’t swim, so getting on this island is a bit difficult if you don’t know what you have to do. Assuming you want to get there the first time, you’ll have to explore the Coastal Cave dungeon.
After defeating the two bosses, a secret passage leads to the large island southwest of Limgrave. The good thing here is that you only have to cross the cave once because after you get to the island, you’ll find the Church Of Dragon Communion Site of Grace in front of the ruins on the hill.

So, make sure you activate it the moment you get on this island the first time, and you’ll be able to fast-travel to this landmark whenever you want without crossing the Coastal Cave again. After you activate the Site of Grace, let’s see what else you can find here.
Without going over all common crafting materials (mostly herbs) on this island, you’ll want to retrieve the following:
- Exalted Flesh – Found on top of the ruins behind the demolished church, near a corpse
- Somber Smithing Stone [1] – Dropped by a Teardrop Scarab in the lower southern area of the island
- Smithing Stone [2] – Found next to a corpse on the edge of the cliff at the southernmost point of the island
- Great Dragonfly Head – Look for it on a corpse between some trees west of the church
Once you find these, you can look for additional items, such as herbs or meat from the turtles you kill, but that’s about it in terms of loot. So, let’s see how the Elden Ring Church Of Dragon Communion works.
How To Use the Church Of Dragon Communion Altar
As said, if you approach the church early in the game, you’ll notice that the Church Of Dragon Communion Altar is not working, but this happens not because it’s broken but because you don’t have the items you need. Specifically Dragon Hearts.
The Elden Ring Church Of Dragon Communion Altar acts as a trading post, where you get to trade the Dragon Hearts for Incantations. Without spoiling the game, you can probably guess that Dragon Hearts come from Dragons, which means that you have to kill a dragon to get its heart.
One of these dragons is in Limgrave, and it’s known as Agheel or Flying Dragon Agheel. You’ll find it at the location marked below.

By defeating Flying Dragon Agheel, you’ll automatically get a Dragon Heart, which you can use at the Church Of Dragon Communion Altar to unlock an Incantation, as you can see in the following screenshot.

Since these Incantations are pretty powerful, you’ll want to unlock as many as you can as fast as possible simply by trading the Dragon Hearts obtained from slaying dragons. The moment you defeat a dragon, return to the Elden Ring Church Of Dragon Communion Altar and unlock an Incantation you can use to help you in the journey ahead.
