Tree Sentinel is the first Elden Ring boss you’ll encounter when you enter the Limgrave region in the video game developed by FromSoftware. The Tree Sentinel Boss patrols the road between the Church of Elleh and The First Step Site of Grace, and unless you go around him, he’ll most likely end your journey pretty fast.
While imposing and deadly, the Elden Ring Tree Sentinel Boss is not the most intelligent foe, and there is a method to deal with him very early in the game. So, if you want to know how to defeat the Elden Ring Tree Sentinel Boss, below I’ll share with you a strategy you can use even if your Tarnished is not wearing the brightest armor or the deadliest weapon.
Recommended Gear
The beauty of this method is that most classes can use it; however, the trick here is to use ranged weapons. Basically, you’ll want to avoid contact with the Tree Sentinel horseman while playing hide-and-seek with him.
Because ranged weapons are encouraged, you’ll get the best results as an Astrologer, especially if you acquired the Meteorite Staff. Obviously, you can use arrows or other ranged weapons, but spells perform best.
Other than that, it is recommended to unlock the Spirit Calling Bell and the Lone Wolf Ashes so you can summon your wolves and distract the boss. Now, as an Astrologer, you’ll also want to stock up on mana, and why not find several Limgrave Golden Seeds and Sacred Tears? These, however, are not mandatory. Other than that, you don’t need anything.
Tree Sentinel Boss Tactics
As mentioned, the strategy we’ll use here relies on your ability to kite the boss and use his size as a weak point. As you probably noticed, the Tree Sentinel is pretty big, and because of this, he’s also slow. Additionally, his size will stop him from hitting you.
The idea behind this method is to kite the boss towards the Church of Elleh gate, which is, in fact, a corridor that the boss can’t enter because he’s too big. So start by attacking him from a distance, then head back to the ruins as fast as possible.
Make sure that you get inside through the main arched gate or tunnel. This corridor is large enough for your Tarnished but too small for the boss, and you’ll use it to escape the Tree Sentinel’s attacks simply by moving from one side to another. If done correctly, you can hit the boss through the tunnel or the entrance, while he won’t be able to hit you.
While trying this method, there are several things you should know:
- The Tree Sentinel can get inside the church, and when this happens, you’ll have to use the entrance and get outside
- When the Tree Sentinel is outside, you should be inside
- Sometimes, the big horseman gets confused, allowing you to hit him several times in a row
- The Spirit Calling Bell and the Lone Wolf Ashes can be successfully used to keep the boss busy while you attack
- From time to time, when he gets inside the ruins, he’ll get stuck inside a corner, so you can continue to attack him as he won’t move at all
The only attack you should worry about is the one from his shield, although it’s not an attack since the shield deflects your hits. When you see Tree Sentinel’s shield glowing, stop attacking.
If done correctly, you can defeat the Elden Ring Tree Sentinel Boss in less than 3 minutes at level 20. Obviously, the higher your level, the faster you’ll deal with him. Once you do this, make sure you get the Golden Halberd he drops.
