Forbidden Forest Merlin Trial puzzles can be completed to increase the size of your inventory in Hogwarts Legacy and get you closer to unlocking the Merlin’s Beard! Trophy/Achievement. The inventory size reward can be claimed from the Exploration tab of the Challenges menu, provided you’ve solved enough puzzles.

There are two requirements you need to meet to start any Merlin Trial:

  • First, make sure you’ve completed the Trials Of Merlin main quest.
  • Second, you must have Mallowsweet Leaves in your inventory, which you can find in the open world, or you can grow yourself at a potting table in the Room of Requirement. You’ll also need the Mallowsweet Seed Recipe, which you can buy from The Magic Neep shop in Hogsmeade.

The Forbidden Forest Merlin puzzles can be challenging because the game doesn’t tell you what you have to do. But I will.

Where To Find the Three Forbidden Forest Merlin Trials in Hogwarts Legacy

First, you should check the Forbidden Forest map below, where I’ve marked the locations of the 3 Merlin Trials in this region. As you can see, they are grouped close to the center of the forest area.

Hogwarts Legacy Forbidden Forest Merlin Trials Locations Map

Merlin Trial #1: East of the Jackdaw’s Tomb Floo Flame

The first Trial is in the southern part of the Forbidden Forest region, east of the Jackdaw’s Tomb Floo Flame. Once you reach the place, interact with the Trial’s stone platform to start it. Then, you must locate and light three torches using the Confringo spell, which you unlock after completing the In the Shadow of the Undercroft main quest.

Look for the first torch north of the stone platform, the second behind the big tree to the southeast of the same platform, and the third northwest of the Trial’s starting spot. If you cast Revelio (Left Arrow on the D-pad of your controller), the torches get highlighted, even through objects. When you light the third torch, the puzzle is complete.

Merlin Trial #2: In the Middle of the Forbidden Forest

For the second puzzle, you must reach the middle of the Forbidden Forest at the location pinpointed on my map. When you find the stone platform, interact with it to start the Trial. From the platform, you can cast Revelio and look around for three highlighted stones—one stone to the south, one to the east, and the last to the north. Now, look for the fireflies near the southern stone, next to the cages on the left side.

First, cast Confringo on the green leaves to burn them and clear the way to the fireflies. Then cast Lumos near the fireflies to make them follow you to the southern stone. Next, you need to find two more swarms of fireflies for the other two stones.

You can find more fireflies east of the stone platform; they are hard to miss because of the glowing. The last swarm of fireflies is hidden behind some rocks southwest of the platform. Cast Revelio to highlight the stones if you have problems finding them. Then, destroy the rocks with Confringo to reveal the fireflies. You must take the fireflies to the last stone to solve the second Forbidden Forest Trial.

Merlin Trial #3: West of the North Ford Bog Entrance Floo Flame

The third puzzle can be started in the northeastern corner of the Forbidden Forest region, west of the North Ford Bog Entrance Floo Flame. After you reach the third location on our map, start the last Trial, then destroy the piles of boulders on the rectangular stones to the east. Next, you must jump from rock to rock to complete the Trial, preferably starting from the one in the south with the crate next to it.

How To Solve All Hogwarts Legacy Forbidden Forest Merlin Trials Puzzles

If you fall and touch the ground, you must start over again. The jumps can be tricky if you are not patient; take it slow and try until you succeed. Practice makes perfect. Upon landing on the eighth stone, you complete the Trial.
