Hogwarts Legacy The Grand Staircase Collection Chest Locations Guide

Hogwarts Legacy The Grand Staircase Collection Chests are trickier to obtain than The Great Hall Collection Chests because you’ll need to solve more puzzles. There are seven Collection Chests in the Grand Staircase area, and they are all mandatory if you want to achieve 100% completion in Hogwarts Castle.

Also, from the Collection Chests, you can get random wand handles or conjuration recipes for the Room of Requirement.

Where To Find the Seven Grand Staircase Collection Chests in Hogwarts Legacy

First, you must get to the Grand Staircase area in Hogwarts Castle, which you can easily do by opening your map, selecting the left middle flag, and fast-traveling to one of the 6 Floo Flames.

Collection Chest #1: Next to a Globe

For the first Grand Staircase Chest, you have to solve an animal door puzzle, which you can find by fast traveling to the Lower Grand Staircase Floo Flame, then going down the moving stairs to the southeast.

Once you’re off the stairs, you should see a door with animal symbols around it. Interact with the door to reveal two triangles on it. As you can see, the triangles have numbers, animal symbols, and question marks on them. The animal symbols represent numbers. Also, the bigger numbers in the middle of the triangles are the sum of the smaller numbers and symbols around them.

Now, to figure out the numbers behind the animal symbols, all you have to know is that the Owl in the bottom left is 0, the Unicorn above it is 1, the Dragon 2, and so on until you reach the last symbol going clockwise (the Kraken), which has 9 assigned to it.

Let’s focus on the top triangle for now, which has the numbers 15 and 2 (Dragon). To add up the numbers so that they equal 23 (the bigger number in the middle), the question mark must be a 6 (Salamander). With that in mind, you have to go up the moving stairs to the left and keep an eye on the right side for a triangle with a question mark in the middle.

Interact with the triangle until it displays a Salamander, and return to the puzzle door. Follow the same logic to determine that the two question marks from the bottom triangle represent a 7 (Octopus). Now, turn around from the door to see a triangle with two question marks under some paintings.

Interact with this triangle as well and make it display an Octopus, then return to the door, which can now be opened. You’ll find the first Chest on a table next to a globe inside.

Collection Chest #2: In Front of Some Shelves

To continue, fast travel to the Faculty Tower Floo Flame in the South Wing, then head northeast, ignoring the stairs, and when you reach the wall with the paintings, go to the right to get to another door with animal symbols around it. You must open this door following the same logic as before.

Thus, do the math to figure out that the question mark on the top triangle represents an Owl (0) and the question mark on the bottom triangle a Crab (5). As such, interact with the triangle with the question mark to the left of the door to make it display an Owl (0).

Then head down the stairs to the east, turn around, go down the stairs to the right of the statue, and go left when you reach the Floo Flame to see the triangle with two question marks on the wall. Interact with the triangle until it displays a Crab (0), return to the door, and head inside to find the second Grand Staircase Chest in front of some shelves.

Collection Chest #3: In Front of a Window

Now, fast-travel back to the Faculty Tower Floo Flame in the South Wing, head southwest, go through the first door on the right side, climb the stairs to reach the next floor, and find another animal door puzzle in the eastern corner. Do the math, and make the triangle with the question mark on the wall to the left of the door display an Owl (0).

Then, go to the wall on the right side of the door and interact with the triangle with the question marks until it displays a Kraken (9). You can now go through the door and up the stairs to find the third crate in front of a window on the northwestern side of the room.

Collection Chest #4: Next to Some Pipes

The fourth Chest takes you northwest of the Ravenclaw Tower Floo Flame, and when you reach the stairs, turn to the right to see yet another animal-symbol door. Quickly do the math, then go to the triangle with the question mark on the wall to the left of the stairs and interact with it until you roll a Scruffy Owl (4).

The triangle with the two question marks is on the wall south of the puzzle door, and you have to interact with it to roll a Crab (5). Head inside the newly accessible room to find the fourth Collection Chest beside some pipes.

Collection Chest #5: Next to a Door

For the next Chest, you must first fast-travel to the Trophy Room Floo Flame. Then, get to the other side of the circular corridor by crossing through the room in the middle, then head up the stairs to the south. Proceed through the gallery until you reach more stairs you must climb, then head to the right.

You’ll shortly get to a spiral staircase on which you must go all the way up. Then, go through the door to enter a corridor with statues of winged creatures.

Head left, then up the narrow spiral staircase to enter the Headmaster’s Office, where you’ll find the Chest collectible on a table next to a door. It’s worth mentioning that before going up the narrow staircase, you can cast Revelio to spot one of the Grand Staircase Field Guide Pages.

Collection Chests #6 & 7: Near a Book on a Pedestal

Now head through the door next to Chest #5 by picking the level 2 lock using the upgraded version of the Alohomora spell, which you learn during The Man Behind The Moons side quest. Then, go up the stairs to reach another locked door, this time by a level 3 lock.

Get through this door and climb more stairs to get to a small room with a desk, among other objects. To continue, you need to pick up the Key Of Admittance from the desk, then retrace your steps all the way to the corridor with the statues of winged creatures you passed through to get into the Headmaster’s Office.

Then, go to the door with the big lock on the northeastern side of the corridor and use the Key Of Admittance to open it. Afterward, head up the stairs to reach a small room with a book on a pedestal in the middle and the last two Collection Chests near it.
